Dear Prospective Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the doctoral psychology internship at the University of Texas at Dallas Student Counseling Center. We view the internship year as the capstone experience of one's professional training and are honored at your interest in our program for this pivotal year. Commitment to training is a strong value of our counseling center. In 2012, The UT Dallas Internship was accredited by the American Psychological Association through 2019*. Prior to that, we trained interns as a partner in the APA-accredited Dallas Metropolitan Consortium in Psychology. You might have noticed we are currently APA Accredited-Inactive (no interns currently on staff), as we took the time during the 2019-2020 year to conduct a national search to fill our Training Director position permanently. I was hired as Assistant Director, Director of Community Engagement in September of 2018 and had also served as Interim Training Director since January of 2019. I am happy to announce that I have been hired to (continue) serving as Training Director on a permanent basis! I love university counseling and have created a career here, serving in varying capacity as practicum counselor, graduate assistant, intern, senior staff, diversity coordinator and assistant director. I have special interest in training and supervision, mental health promotion, group therapy and increasing access and equity in mental health.

We hope that interns complete our program with an understanding of 1) the importance of social justice and equity in mental health, 2) the benefit in using trends to inform creativity in university counseling service, 3) the power of community intervention and campus engagement and 4) the value in establishing a clinical niche from population needs. We consistently receive feedback from interns that one of the strengths of our center is the entire staff's commitment and investment in training. The Student Counseling Center has an interdisciplinary staff with all members intricately involved in the training program. Interns have the opportunity to develop close working relationships with many staff members and are exposed to diverse theoretical orientations and approaches. Interns have also noted that, in addition to our focus on enhancing and developing new skill sets, we are highly attentive to intern's professional identity. We value the internship year as an important time for integrating professional and personal development. We feel the staff's commitment to providing supportive, yet stimulating supervisory and mentoring relationships creates an environment rich for this growth and increased self-awareness. Finally, interns have shared that the staff models a commitment to social justice and engagement in rich diversity dialogues and self-reflection.
